Electromagnetic Fields May Help Prevent Spread of Breast Cancer Cells

Electromagnetic fields might help prevent some breast cancers from spreading to other parts of the body, new research has found.

The study showed that low intensity electromagnetic fields hindered the mobility of specific breast cancer cells by preventing the formation of long, thin extensions at the edge of a migrating cancer cell. The research was done on cells in a lab, and the concept hasn't yet been tested in animals or humans. The study was published today in the journal Communications Biology.

"A cancer cell has a tendency to do the most destructive thing imaginable," said Jonathan Song, lead author of the study. Song is an assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at The Ohio State University and a member of the molecular biology and cancer genetics program at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center.

 Breast cancer continues to be a global health crisis. In 2018, there were an estimated 2.1 million new cases of breast cancer worldwide. In the United States alone, another life is lost to breast cancer every 15 minutes. Breast cancer comes in several forms, with triple-negative breast cancer being the most aggressive and hardest to treat. In all subtypes, once the cancer has metastasized, or spread from the breast to other organs, the odds are survival are significantly lower. Multigene testing for all patients with breast cancer cost-effective, ‘will save more lives

Multigene testing for all patients with breast cancer could be a cost-effective way to reduce disease burden compared with testing based upon family history or other clinical criteria, according to study results.
“Our research strategy is focused on targeted precision prevention, [and] a key theme in our research strategy for a long time has been broadening access to genetic testing. This will increase the number of people who can access prevention and screening and reduce burden of disease well beyond what is possible through current clinical protocols,” Ranjit Manchanda, MD, PhD, clinical senior lecturer at Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine of Barts Cancer Institute at Queen Mary University of London, told HemOnc Today. “This has two components and approaches — increasing testing at cancer diagnosis and population testing. The work for this particular paper is providing evidence for testing all [patients with] breast cancer.”
